Aurel Stein lived a self contained life by enjoying his work in remote places. However living in such places was not solitary since the hardship of actual living made it necessary for him to take assistance of some trusted men. He ensured that those who would take such responsibility to maintain the orderliness of the domestic life in camp and the promptness and accuracy in his work were reliable, efficient and above all trustworthy. In selecting such men he displayed considerable tact and judgement. Two such men Stein encountered in Kashmir were Pandit Shambhu Nath Raina and Pandit Ram Chand Bali. Both these men, with their loyalty and sincerity, earned Stein’s trust and confidence. Besides being with him in his camps in Kashmir, they also accompanied him on his remote journeys .

Pandit Shambhu Nath even traveled with Stein on his trans Iranian expedition and in fact went as far as up to the port of Bandar Abbas.

“In the long list of those who thus assisted and stayed with him for a number of years appeared also the name of Pandit Ramchandra Bali, a not-so-well-known young man who had been holding an ordinary post in the Llyods Bank for a number of years.

“Ramchandra Bali was born in 1889 A.D in the house of a Kashmiri Pandit named Pandit Raja Ram Bali. As was the custom in those days, he made a beginning with education in Persian, Urdu and Sanskrit languages. Thereafter, he got educated in English. After doing his graduation he looked around for a job. For some time he worked in the Department of Arts & Crafts . The major part of his life was spent by him in his employment with Sir Aurel Stein. Ultimately, he retired from the post of Superintendent of Stationary & Supplies. He was one of the first Kashmiris who received training at the YMCA. He had received this training at Lahore and acquired a good experience in Pitman’s System. Aurel Stein needed a young typist and clerk to look after his work.

"An interview was therefore arranged, which was attended by a number of intelligent Kashmiris. But the choice fell on Ramchandra Bali, and he joined Aurel Stein’s service on a salary of forty Rupees per month. In just a few years’ time Bali won Aurel Stein’s heart and succeeded in winning his confidence."
